Geomancy, a form of divination, is based on the study of the earth.

Introduction

Geomancy, which essentially involves listening to the sounds of the earth, is a very ancient art. Geomancers are those who practice it. After two hundred years of obscurity, it has reemerged in a more evolved form, alongside modern esotericism. Although it is known by this name in the West, it is similar to Feng Shui in Asia. Its name comes from “geo,” meaning earth, and “mancy,” meaning divination. This classifies it among the divinatory arts.

History

The origins of geomancy remain unclear today, with theories pointing to various regions of the world, but the most widely accepted theory suggests it originated in Persia around the 8th and 9th centuries. Subsequently, geomancy is believed to have spread throughout the rest of Arabia, to Mesopotamia, and to Egypt, before reaching India and China. Equivalents can also be found in Africa and in Voodoo under the name Ifa.

From the very beginning—and particularly among the Greeks—geomancy has been based on the belief that the earth is a living being, personified by the primordial goddess Gaia. The practice, therefore, involved listening to the sounds and messages of the earth. Today, geomancers still regard the earth as a living being, which they call Mother Earth or Gaia.

The differences lie in the changes that have been made, primarily through the incorporation of the principle of ley lines. This principle, although ancient, originates, among other sources, from the Celtic druids. It is based on the earth’s energy lines, which form a network across the earth’s surface, with points of concentration known as places of power.

Practical

Geomancy is probably one of the simplest divination arts to practice, since it does not require any specific materials. There are several ways to practice geomancy: by throwing pebbles or dice, or by drawing lines and dots, followed by an interpretation of the results. To do this, geomancy relies on sixteen figures (each consisting of four to eight dots).

Uses

Ground Connection

The primary purpose of geomancy is to restore the connection between humans and the earth. Ley lines and energy focal points allow us to reconnect with the earth and feel closer to it by using them.

The earth’s places of power can serve as sites for constructing buildings of great significance: temples, sacred statues, menhirs, and so on. Reading the lines allows us to study nature and trace its course. This helps us understand why trees grow in one place and not another, locate underground waterways, and follow their paths. In the latter case, it is dowsers—who use wooden rods—who detect and trace these waterways. While they are often described as people with a gift for dowsing, in reality, they are geomancers.

In Feng Shui, geomancers use a very special compass to identify the points of connection between humans, nature, and the cosmos.

Divination

Divination, the most common use of geomancy, provides answers to questions. The principle involves asking a question and then drawing an interpretation from the patterns formed by lines. Some people even practice this daily to learn about their future.

Healing

This is the area of greatest interest to modern geomancers. Through their discipline, they seek to use the earth as a means of healing. Beyond choosing a location based on energy lines and power spots, this also involves designing spaces—taking into account the earth’s forces—to create balance. The choice of orientations, shapes, materials, and colors are important elements in the overall design, helping us reconnect with the earth as fully as possible and live in harmony with it.
