Introduction

This mount is a classic, as its name, Pegasus, is given to winged horses in the broadest sense. Indeed, many fictional worlds refer to winged horse breeds as “Pegasus.” However, in its original sense, the term “Pegasus” is incorrect, as no such species exists.

The reason is simple. In Greek mythology, Pegasus is a unique creature; therefore, it refers to his proper name (Pegasus in Latin) and not to his species. He is the son of the Gorgon Medusa and Poseidon.

Description

Pegasus is described as the most magnificent of all horses, with a coat and wings of immaculate white. It is an exceptional animal, not only for its beauty but also for its ability to fly. Moreover, it possesses exceptional speed and strength.

History

Birth

Pegasus was born when his mother died; he sprang from her blood when she was beheaded by Perseus. His brother, the winged boar Chrysaor, was born at the same time.

Bellerophon

As soon as he was born, Pegasus went to Mount Olympus to serve Zeus. With the help of Athena and Poseidon, Bellerophon captured him because he needed him to defeat the Chimera. During their journey, dissatisfied with the way he had been harnessed, he stamped his hoof on a rock on Mount Helicon and created the Hippocrene spring.

The Ascent of Mount Olympus

Once the Chimera was slain, he continued to accompany Bellerophon until the hero decided to ascend Mount Olympus, deeming himself worthy to dwell there. Since the realm of the gods is inaccessible to mortals, he fell during the journey and lost his life. Pegasus continued the ascent and rejoined Zeus. The king of the gods raised him to the heavens and turned him into a constellation.
